Whitewater vs Swiftwater Rescue

This has been a debate for a while. Which term do you like to use for whitewater paddlers and why?

I’ve never used the term whitewater rescue but I like it.

Swiftwater rescue is generally for first responders, firefighers, search and rescue. Whitewater rescue is for boaters.

In Europe we have a clear distinction between the two.

Whitewater rescue is mainly taught to people who are moving down the river in a craft where the rescue is dynamic. The groups are normally moving down river in a small team with limited equipment. Think special forces small team lots of capabilities

Swiftwater tends to be emergency services that are called onto a scene that is now somewhat static. Eg someone stuck in a flooded stranded car in a flood urban enviroment.

Swiftwater teams tend to be resource and equipment heavy.

Both sets of teams work in a similar enviroment using similar techniques but for different applications.

Whitewater rescue is rivers class 3

Swiftwater class 2 river plus flooded urban enviroment of
